Andy Stankiewicz has been named an assistant coach for Arizona State University baseball, Head Coach Pat Murphy announced today. Stankiewicz joins Turtle Thomas, who was also named to the ASU coaching staff today, as the newest members of the baseball staff.Stankiewicz spent 2005 as the manager of the Staten Island Yankees, the New York Yankees Class A affiliate. Stankiewicz led Staten Island to the 2005 NY-Penn League championship. He managed in Staten Island for two seasons before becoming the Yankees Southwest Scout this past off-season. Stankiewicz also spent two seasons as a defensive coordinator and roaming infield instructor for the Yankees minor league system, in addition to one season as the hitting instructor for the Rookie League Gulf Coast Yankees.
“This addition of Andy Stankiewicz to our coaching staff is another great step for our program,” said head coach Pat Murphy. “He played on the west coast at Pepperdine, he played in the big leagues and he was a successful coach and manager at the minor league level. We are very excited to have him in the Sun Devil baseball family.”
Stankiewicz comes to ASU after serving as the Southwest scout for the New York Yankees. Stankiewicz spent two seasons (2004-05) as the manager of the Staten Island Yankees, the Class A affiliate of the New York Yankees, in addition to one season (2002) as the hitting instructor for the Gulf Coast Yankees of the Rookie League. He also served as a roaming defensive coordinator and infield instructor for the Yankees farm system.
Stankiewicz played seven seasons in the Major Leagues for the Yankees, the Houston Astros, the Montreal Expos and the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was an original Diamondback, playing for the club during the 1998 inaugural season. He was a 12th round draft choice of the Yankees in 1986 out of Pepperdine and played nine total seasons as a minor league player. He was a part of four championship teams during his minor league career. He retired following the 2001 season.
Stankiewicz joins Turtle Thomas as the new members of the Arizona State baseball coaching staff. Tim Esmay will be the Assistant Head Coach and Jeff Mousser will also remain on the staff as a Graduate Manager.
